Knowing how to light a coal fire is surprisingly simple once you know the steps you need to take. With the right preparation and equipment, you can successfully light your coal fire within minutes. Before you get started, however, you’ll need to ensure that the fire grate is clean. Providing you clean the fire grate regularly, you should be able to light a coal fire quickly and safely, every time you want to use it.

You will, of course, need coal to put on the fire, but you’ll need to have a stock of firelight’s and dry kindling wood too. By creating a small combustion chamber, the fire will be able to take hold and reach a high temperature relatively quickly, thus making sure it doesn’t go out as soon as it’s lit.

Firstly, place to unlit firelighters in the middle of your grate and surround them with pieces of dry kindling wood. This will create the combustion chamber effect, so be sure to make sure the firelighters are well-covered but that some air gaps remain.

You can now light the firelighters and begin to fill the surrounding gaps with more dry kindling. At this point, the fire should be beginning to take hold. From there, you can place your coal over the firelighters and kindling, so that it’s covering them completely.

Then, simply close the door so that you can adjust the air levels appropriately. With these simple and straightforward steps, you can light your coal fire swiftly and safely.
